Insurance From A Private Insurer
If you are considering applying for insurance coverage from a GA health insurance company, you need to be aware of the following:
-
Simply because you have applied for individual health insurance coverage from an insurance company, the insurer is not under any obligation to agree to provide coverage.
-
You may be asked a series of health questions as part of the application process. The insurance company will accept or reject an applicant based on his or her health status. The company may also choose to offer a policy with limitations as to the type of coverage it provides.
-
The terms of an individual health insurance plan in Georgia will vary depending on the company, since the state does not require all carriers to sell standardized insurance products.
-
All individual insurance plans in Georgia must provide coverage for certain healthcare services. Two examples of these are the cost of vaccinations for children and mammograms for adult women.
-
The rate you will be charged for your health insurance premium will depend on the state of your health. In addition, premiums may vary depending on your age and/or gender.
-
When your insurance policy is up for renewal, the company cannot increase your premiums because of a change in your health. The company can increase the premium rates as you age, though.

Insurance Conversion Policy
In a situation where you have been covered under an employer's group health insurance plan for at least six months and you stop working for that employer, you can buy what is known as a basic conversion policy. This insurance policy is provided by the same company that gave you coverage through your previous group insurance plan.
The basic conversion policy does not have to provide identical coverage to that of your previous group insurance plan. However, if you were previously covered under an HMO, the conversion policy must provide coverage that is "substantially similar."
If you were previously covered under a self-insured group insurance plan, the insurance company is required to offer you an enhanced conversion policy. At least two options must be presented to you to choose from.
